The Electoral Officer of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has notified elections for two posts on the IPL Governing Council. AK Joti, the Electoral Officer, has issued a notice for the elections to the two posts of Members of the GC under Rule 28 of the BCCI Constitution. The election will be held at the BCCI Annual General Meeting (AGM) on September 18.
Rule 28 provides for four members from the general body on the IPL Governing Council, two of whom are to be elected at the AGM. The current elected members are Himachal Pradesh’s Arun Singh Dhumal, the chairman, and Mizoram’s Khairul Jamal Majumdar, a member.
Both are set to be re-elected unopposed. They are needed to seek re-election as the term of these two GC members, as per BCCI constitution, is only one year. The two have to file the nominations on September 9 or 10 and after scrutiny, the final list of contestants will be notified on September 12
The other two members from the general body are secretary Devajit Saikia and treasurer Raghuram Bhat. The IPL Governing Council has seven members in all. Besides the four general body representatives, the council comprises the BCCI CEO, an Indian Cricketers’ Association (ICA) representative and a CAG nominee.
The fact that the notification is only for the election of the IPL GC members seemingly rules out any surprise election for any other post. Nothing of the sort was expected anyway, as all the current office-bearers are expected to continue.
The Electoral Officer has also invited Full Members of the BCCI to submit applications to have their respective representatives included in the Electoral Roll for the Elections. The representatives of the state associations attending the AGM will, understandably, constitute the Electoral Roll.
The state associations have been notified to submit applications nominating their representatives for the AGM. The process of nominating representatives of the state units began on August 25, with August 31 being the deadline. Following the examination of objections and decisions thereon, the final Electoral Roll will be released on September 8.
