One of the biggest high school football upsets in recent memory sent shockwaves across USA TODAY Sports’ Super 25 national rankings in Week 3.
Columbus’ (Miami, FL) win over then-No. 2 Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV) forced a variety of shifts, with Columbus entering the Super 25 inside the top 10 and the Gaels slipping down. The ripple effects include St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA), which had lost to Bishop Gorman the week before, dropping as well.

That wasn’t the only upset, though Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita, CA) likely wouldn’t use that word to describe its win over then-No. 4 Centennial (Corona, CA). The Eagles took down the top-ranked California team in a rematch of last yaer’s CIF-SS championship, and in turn rose from 23 into the top five.
With that said, we also have a new No. 1 in the rankings. St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) dominated DeSoto (TX), triggering the running clock in a 38-14 blowout of the Eagles. The Raiders’ first team defense has yet to allow a point so far. That’s not to take anything away from IMG, which has destroyed their two opponents in Lone Peak (UT) and Cornerstone Christian (TX), but to this point, the Raiders have faced better competition.
Allen, on the other hand, got vengeance from last year’s semifinals with a win over then-No. 16 Duncanville. The Allen Eagles enter the Super 25, as does another Texas team who shut out its opponent in Week 1. It was a big opening week for Texas, which included No. 11 Waxahachie setting a scoring record against a rival.
