University Of Maryland, Testudo Collect National Recognition In USA Today 2026 Readers’ Choice Awards

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland collected two top-five accolades in recent USA TODAY Readers’ Choice Awards. In two polls nominated by an expert panel and voted on by USA TODAY readers, the University of Maryland was named the No. 3 Best College for Sports Fans (2026), while Testudo was awarded No. 5 Best College Mascot (2026).

In both rankings, Maryland captured the nation’s attention as a premier athletics destination — on the field, off the field and in the stands.

The University of Maryland was named the third-best college for sports fans, topping every Big Ten university and trailing only Auburn and West Virginia, respectively.

“Maryland has remained a consistent force across the college sports spectrum, with nationally prominent teams in basketball as well as soccer and lacrosse,” USA Today said. “With College Park, MD, creating the perfect atmosphere, Terrapins fans are treated to top-tier venues that enhance the experience.”

At every event, Testudo roams campus, encouraging fandom and establishing a presence as the fifth-best mascot in the nation, according to the recent ranking.

“The famed Diamondback Terrapin of College Park is nearing a 100th birthday, having first appeared on campus in 1933,” USA Today wrote. “Since that time, the Maryland mascot has been front and center at sporting events, while the bronze statue of Testudo has famously gotten nose rubs for good luck before exams, games, and more.”

Maryland Athletics continues to build on its tradition of excellence, with the Terrapins competing at the highest level of collegiate athletics while creating memorable experiences for student-athletes, fans and the College Park community.
