The Boston Celtics seem to have a type.
On Monday, the Celtics reportedly agreed to an Exhibit 10 contract with Devin Carter.
Carter joins the Celtics after being drafted by the Sacramento Kings and waived by the Atlanta Hawks. The No. 13 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft hasn’t lived up to expectations yet, but he still has the potential to become the two-way role player many expected him to be.
In fact, one player Carter was compared to ahead of the NBA Draft could soon be his teammate.
Here’s how RotoWire profiled Carter in 2024:
“Given his shooting numbers, explosiveness on defense and ability to spark the team out of nowhere, he has drawn comparisons to Derrick White. It wouldn’t be surprising if his career follows a similar trajectory, starting as a defensive-minded guard and working his way to becoming an elite two-way player who can start for almost any team in the league. Carter has the advantage of his size, allowing him to play as a combo guard efficiently in both roles.”

Bleacher Report included White among Carter’s two NBA comparisons.
“He could look more like Derrick White if he provides more of a reliable scoring punch and he emerges as a perimeter stopper,” Bleacher Report’s Jonathan Wasserman wrote.
So far, that scoring punch has been hard to find.
Through two seasons, Carter is averaging 6.4 points per game. The biggest problem has been his 3-point shooting. He’s connected on just 48 of his 175 3-point attempts (27.4 percent) to date.
The hope is that Carter can tap more into the player he was in his final season at Providence when he attempted 6.8 3-pointers per game and made 37.7 percent of those opportunities. That combination of volume and accuracy, along with his in-your-face defense, would make him a valuable two-way player.
Time will tell if the Celtics — and White — can get it out of him.
