Executives from Meta, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Nvidia have agreed to a voluntary set of artificial intelligence safety standards following a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday.
The agreement calls on participating technology companies to establish stronger internal controls and work with independent auditors to assess whether their AI systems operate as intended. The companies also committed to measures aimed at preventing AI tools from hacking or accessing other technical systems in unintended ways.
Executives attending the meeting included Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and OpenAI President Greg Brockman.
Zuckerberg said the companies had agreed to develop “robust internal controls” around their AI systems. Trump described the voluntary agreement as a form of protection and said he was considering establishing a 10-member board focused on AI safety, though he did not identify potential members. He also said a new White House official would soon be appointed to lead AI policy.
The accord comes amid growing scrutiny of advanced AI systems and their potential safety risks. According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll conducted from September 17-20, 73% of respondents said they were concerned AI companies had not done enough to prevent serious societal harm, while 55% supported slowing AI development.
The meeting also addressed the rapid expansion of data centres required to train and operate AI models. Trump reiterated his support for further data-centre development despite concerns in several US communities over electricity demand, utility costs and other local impacts.
Separately, the administration unveiled a new AI-based tool intended to make government services easier to access. Trump also directed federal agencies to use the term “super intelligence” instead of “artificial intelligence” when referring to the technology.
