Watching the Gulf: New area of tropical development to watch

NEW ORLEANS —

We are tracking an area of low pressure expected to form over the southwestern Gulf by mid-week, with a moderate chance of developing into a tropical depression late in the week.

According to a Sunday afternoon outlook from the National Hurricane Center , the system has a near-zero percent chance of tropical formation over the next 48 hours. However, conditions could become marginally favorable for gradual organization over the next seven days, giving the system a 40% chance of development as it drifts slowly northward.

“Although environmental conditions are only expected to be marginally conducive, some slow development is possible and a tropical depression could form late this week while the system drifts northward,” NHC forecaster noted in the update.

Model guidance indicates no immediate threat to land over the next few days.
