USA TODAY Sports Super 15 West region football rankings, Week 8

Who will knock off Santa Margarita (CA)?

It wasn’t Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA), who mustered just seven points and now has its lowest two-game scoring total in 15 years. As such, Santa Margarita and its ridiculous defense continues to roll.

There were minimal changes in the Super 15 West rankings this week, as every team excluding Mater Dei either won, had a forfeit win, or was off. At the top, the Eagles knocked off the Trinity League foe; at the bottom, the teams across the 13-15 range combined to outscore their opponents 179-7.

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, vs. Servite (CA), 7 p.m. PST

Santa Margarita continued its run through California, allowing just seven points to Mater Dei in a 14-7 victory. The Eagles have allowed just 34 points through six games and have only once given up more than seven. They stay No. 1 in the West and jumped up in the Super 25.

2. Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, NV)

Record: 5-1

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, vs. Pinecrest Academy Sloan Canyon (NV), 7 p.m. PST

Bishop Gorman had an off week and should be fairly fresh for the rest of its season after playing just two games over the last month. Its next opponent is a 5-1 Pinecrest Academy Sloan Canyon (Henderson, NV) program.

3. St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA)

Record: 5-1

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, at Serra (CA), 7 p.m. PST

St. John Bosco entered Trinity League play with an impressive 40-14 win over JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, CA). Running back Maliq Allen continues to be a force, accumulating 239 yards and four touchdowns on the day.

4. Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, CA)

Record: 6-0

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, at Valley Vista (AZ), 7 p.m. MT

Sierra Canyon showed its depth in the 41-0 win over Loyola (Los Angeles), as the Trailblazers won big, even without Jaxsen Stokes in the run game. Senior DL Brayden Tautolo had three tackles for loss and two sacks.

5. Hamilton (Chandler, AZ)

Record: 5-0

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, at Valley Vista (AZ), 7 p.m. MT

Hamilton had an off week, a good break for a team still waiting to get star WR Roye Oliver III on the field. This upcoming month of football will pit Hamilton against some of the best teams in the state, giving the Huskies a chance to prove themselves as the top seed in the Open Division.

6. De La Salle (Concord, CA)

Record: 6-0

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, at Monte Vista (CA), 7:15 p.m. PST

De La Salle continues to move up following a 42-0 win over Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, CA). QB Jaxon Loftin and Damari Dean connected for a 63-yard touchdown on the fifth snap of the game, and that ended up being all the Spartans needed.

7. Mater Dei (Santa Ana, CA)

Record: 4-2

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, at JSerra Catholic (CA), 7 p.m. PST

The question of Mater Dei: Is this lethargic offense more about the team’s identity or about the strength of schedule it has faced? The Monarchs have scored just 25 points across their last three games, though freshman Paytyn Guess had some impressive moments this weekend. Next week’s game against JSerra will help answer the question.

8. Mililani (HI)

Record: 8-0

Next game: Saturday, Oct. 10, at Kapolei (HI), 7 p.m. HST

Mililani answered its 35-30 scare (if you want to use that word) with a 47-7 blowout. No reason for concern for the top team in Hawaii. There’s one more regular season game before the Trojans’ real test begins.

9. Orange Lutheran (CA)

Record: 4-2

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, at St. John Bosco (CA), 7 p.m. PST

A slight rise for Orange Lutheran after putting up 56 points against Servite (Anaheim, CA). The Lancers have played well against a very tough schedule, but the upcoming week against St. John Bosco might be their hardest test yet.

10. Folsom (CA)

Record: 6-0

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, vs. Whitney (CA), 7 p.m. PST

Folsom crossed the 200-plus points scored, fewer than 100 points allowed mark this season after its 43-7 win over Granite Bay (CA). The Bulldogs pulled away in the second half, and as the second half of the season is underway, they’ll look to continue pulling away from competition and secure its spot as a top team in California entering the postseason.

11. Basha (Chandler, AZ)

Record: 3-2

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, vs. Westwood (AZ), 7 p.m. MT

An idle week for Basha, a team managing injuries, as October begins. The hardest part of the Bears’ regular season is in the rearview mirror, and while they face some good teams moving forward, they have a real shot at going 5-0 over the final month of the regular season and securing a spot in the Open Division playoffs. But they have to get healthy.

12. Chandler (AZ)

Record: 5-1

Next game: Friday, Oct. 16, vs. Centennial (AZ), 7 p.m. MT

Chandler had an unexpected off week as its presumptive opponent forfeited the game in the days leading up to Friday. Will this help or hurt the Wolves? They now have two straight weeks without a game, and will need to make sure they’re not rusty against a very good Centennial (Peoria, AZ) team that is right on the fringes of entering the Super 15.

13. Mountain Ridge (Herriman, UT)

Record: 8-0

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, at Bingham (UT), 7 p.m. MT

In Mountain Ridge’s first week in the Super 15, the Sentinels took down cross-town rival Herriman 45-7, a convincing victory for the top team in Utah. QB Jaxon Hunt threw for four touchdowns, two of which went to WR Tytan Dejong, and LB/SS Cole Uluave had two interceptions and three passes defended.

14. Liberty (Peoria, AZ)

Record: 5-1

Next game: Thursday, Oct. 15, vs. Boulder Creek (AZ), 7 p.m. MT

Liberty crushed Arizona’s Mountain Ridge (Glendale, AZ) 64-0, another outstanding display for the Lions. They did it on the ground, rushing for 384 and seven touchdowns as a team, and safety Kaden Miller had an interception.

15. Puyallup (WA)

Record: 5-0

Next game: Friday, Oct. 9, vs. South Kitsap (WA), 7 p.m. PST

For the second week in a row, Puyallup posted 70 points. QB Noah Smith has 16 passing touchdowns across the last three games, and running back Briytan Bailey continues to produce, racking up 186 yards and four touchdowns on just 11 carries across the last two games.
