A man who entered a tiger enclosure at a zoo in England on Oct. 10 has died, local authorities announced.
South Yorkshire Police said in a statement that the unnamed man entered the enclosure at Yorkshire Wildlife Park at about 1:35 p.m. local time. He was subsequently attacked and pronounced dead at the scene.
The tiger did not escape the enclosure and is not a threat to the public, the statement reads. The Wildlife Park said in an Oct. 11 statement that the tiger, named Altai, will not be euthanized and that the park is closed following the incident.
“Many, many people have contacted us about Altai, the tiger,” the statement reads. “We can reassure everyone that he is safe and well and will not be euthanised (sic) as a result of this incident.”
Authorities said that the man’s family is aware of the attack and are “being supported by specialist officers.”
Ed Miliband, British foreign secretary and MP for Doncaster North which includes Yorkshire Wildlife Park, said in a statement posted to Facebook that he was “deeply saddened to hear of the incident” and “very grateful to the emergency services and staff of the park who responded.”
The department said it is “aware” of videos of the incident circulating online and asked the public not to share them.
The park opened in 2009 and the tiger exhibit, named Land of the Tigers, opened in 2011, according to The Guardian. The exhibit is a purpose-built 2-acre reserve for Amur tigers, also known as Siberian tigers, an endangered subspecies. It includes a 300-meter raised walkway for visitors to observe the animals, according to its website.
