Many women in Dehradun have expressed concern over the misuse of artificial intelligence to create misleading or manipulated videos, especially of women, which is affecting their real lives. They urged that authorities should ensure to act against those indulging in such activities and tarnishing the image of women. Regarding this, the Uttarakhand State Commission for Women (USCW) urged that women who face any misconduct on social media through AI can approach the nearest police station or the commission.

The issue was flagged after a recent incident where a video allegedly showing a woman bathing in the Ganga in objectionable clothing circulated rapidly on social media, sparking concern and controversy. However, the woman seen in the video has reportedly come forward and claimed that the video is AI-edited and digitally manipulated.

The woman has urged people to immediately delete the alleged AI-generated video and warned that legal action may be taken against those who continue to share or circulate it.

One of the women in Dehradun, Sunita Bisht, said that the incident cannot be ignored. It poses tension and risk for women. Nowadays, everyone is on social media and such activities involving the misuse of AI to hamper the image of women are a matter of concern and have created fear. The authorities should take action and ensure punishment for those who misuse AI to make such manipulated videos.

“I also use social media and upload videos and photos. But at the same time, the emergence of AI and some people misusing it has created fear among us that in the future I or any other woman can become a victim where misuse of AI can hamper her image. A strict law or action should be taken for this purpose,” said another woman, Reena Kashyap.

Many other women expressed similar views and demanded some solution.

In response, USCW chairwoman Kusum Kandwal said that the matter is indeed concerning. She said that the commission has been organising AI awareness programmes in collaboration with the police. Recently, the commission also organised programmes to raise awareness among college girls. Experts from the concerned field were also invited during the awareness programmes. However, merely organising programmes is not enough to control such activities and everyone has to become aware, she said.

Kandwal further emphasised that if any woman faces misconduct on social media, she should immediately contact the nearest police station or can also approach the commission. The commission will ensure guidance and help in such cases.
