San Diego mosque shooting investigated as a possible hate crime
Investigators are working to determine a motive after two suspects opened fire at a San Diego mosque, killing three people. San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl said officers responded to reports of an active shooter at the Islamic Center of San Diego at 11:43 a.m. yesterday and arrived four minutes later to find three men dead, including a security guard whom Wahl said was “pivotal” in preventing more bloodshed.

Police then found a vehicle nearby with two teens believed to be the shooters inside, both dead from apparent self-inflicted gunshot wounds, Wahl said. The suspects were identified by law enforcement officials as 17-year-old Cain Clark and 18-year-old Caleb Vazquez, according to two senior law enforcement officials and a federal law enforcement official.
Earlier that morning, the mother of one suspect had reported that her son, her firearms and her car were missing, Wahl said. Officers were speaking with her when they learned of the shooting.

What to watch in Tuesday’s primaries
President Donald Trump has seen several successes this month in his effort to oust Republicans who oppose his agenda — including on Saturday, when Sen. Bill Cassidy lost his primary in Louisiana in the first race since voting to impeach Trump in 2021. (Cassidy says he has no regrets, though.)
Today, Trump faces his most prominent test yet as he takes aim at Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky. The two have clashed across multiple issues, including the Iran war, the push to release the Epstein files and Trump’s so-called “big, beautiful bill.” Trump is endorsing former Navy SEAL Ed Gallrein.

Trump’s influence will be put to the test in several other races. In Georgia, Trump-endorsed Lt. Gov. Burt Jones will compete against Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and state Attorney General Chris Carr to replace term-limited GOP Gov. Brian Kemp. And in Alabama, Trump-backed Rep. Barry Moore looks to succeed GOP Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who is running for governor with an endorsement from — you guessed correctly — Trump.
In addition to primaries in Kentucky, Georgia and Alabama, elections are also happening today in Idaho, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

Reports to gauge how Americans are handling inflation
Are Americans finally starting to feel the strain of soaring gas prices and stubborn inflation? Economists and investors believe quarterly earnings reports from four major retailers will reveal the answer. The closely watched earnings parade is set to kick off this morning, when Home Depot releases its data, providing an early read both on consumer confidence and the housing market. Lowe’s, Walmart and Target will also release reports this week.
Together, the results are expected to offer one of the clearest snapshots yet of how U.S. households are faring as a sharper divide between wealthier households and lower- and middle-class consumers.

Ebola deaths rise sharply as outbreak alarms WHO
The death toll from an Ebola outbreak in central Africa rose sharply Tuesday, with the head of the World Health Organization expressing concern over the “scale and speed of the epidemic.”
At least 131 people are believed to have been killed and 531 suspected to have been infected in the latest outbreak, according to the Congolese Ministry of Health. An American missionary was among those who tested positive for the deadly disease.
