Is Meta AI the next battleground for conversational advertising? 0101.Today examines the opportunity

As consumers increasingly turn to AI assistants for product research and recommendations, conversational AI could open a new frontier for digital advertising. While there is no public confirmation of sponsored advertisements being tested within Meta AI, the possibility raises questions about advertising budgets, consumer trust and AI-led commerce.

Ajay Varma, Co-Founder and Managing Partner, 0101.Today, believes Meta’s opportunity lies in connecting AI-led discovery with its existing advertising and commerce ecosystem.

“For years, Meta defined how social advertising worked and everyone else adapted. In generative AI, platforms such as ChatGPT and Claude shaped the user behaviour first. OpenAI has already expanded ChatGPT advertising internationally and created the consumer expectation that sponsored placements can sit alongside AI conversations without directly influencing the answer.”

With Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp already connecting consumers and businesses, Meta could link product discovery, AI-led recommendations and brand conversations. Beauty and personal care, consumer electronics, education, travel, automotive, real estate and financial services could be among the early categories to explore the format, given the research and comparison involved in their purchase journeys.

On the likely impact on advertising budgets, Varma said, “Initially, I would expect most of the money to be reallocated rather than genuinely incremental. Advertisers do not usually create an entirely new budget simply because a new format appears. They test it against channels that are already doing a similar job. So, the first budgets likely to move into Meta AI would come from two places: existing Meta performance budgets and high-intent Google Search budgets.”

0101.Today is a data-driven conversion specialist focused on KPI improvement across the marketing funnel. Working at the intersection of data, media, communication and technology, the firm helps enterprises integrate brand building, acquisition, retention and data into a unified growth system aligned with business outcomes rather than isolated campaign metrics.

For Meta, established advertiser relationships and distribution infrastructure could offer a significant advantage. However, Varma believes the competition will increasingly be about reaching consumers at the point of decision-making and demonstrating measurable outcomes. He said, “The bigger shift is that the competition may no longer be simply: Meta versus Google for media budgets. It could become: social intent versus search intent versus conversational intent. And conversational intent could prove the most valuable of the three if platforms can demonstrate that it produces better-quality outcomes.”

“Meta spent years teaching advertisers how to buy audiences. Google taught them how to buy keywords. AI platforms are now teaching them how to buy relevance to a decision. That is the real battle,” he concluded.
