Call for Applications: Microsoft Imagine Cup 2027 Offers Startups $250,000

Microsoft for Startups has opened applications for the Imagine Cup 2027, a global competition for early-stage startups developing technology solutions with commercial potential.

The competition gives founders an opportunity to present their products to industry experts, gain visibility among potential customers and partners, and compete for cash prizes and Microsoft for Startups credits. Unlike earlier editions focused primarily on student innovators, the 2027 competition welcomes eligible startups across several industries, including healthcare, retail, financial services and cybersecurity.

The first-place winner will receive US$250,000 in cash and US$1 million in Microsoft for Startups credits. Applications close on February 28, 2027.

What Does Imagine Cup 2027 Offer?

The competition has several recognition and prize opportunities.

  • Imagine Cup Champion: US$250,000 in cash and US$1 million in Microsoft for Startups credits.
  • Second-place finalist: US$50,000 in cash and US$350,000 in startup credits.
  • Third-place finalist: US$25,000 in cash and US$350,000 in startup credits.
  • Top Student Startup: US$25,000 in cash and US$250,000 in startup credits for the eligible student-led venture selected for this award.
  • Category winners: Recognition, Microsoft executive mentorship, promotional features and opportunities for enterprise access.
  • Top 20 startups: Recognition and opportunities to connect with enterprise customers and the wider Microsoft ecosystem.

The three overall finalists compete for the championship prizes. The Top Student Startup follows a separate judging pathway and is not eligible to win one of the three finalist prizes.

Startup credits are distinct from cash awards. They are subject to Microsoft’s programme terms and are intended to support eligible startups using its technology.

Who Can Apply?

Imagine Cup 2027 is open to eligible early-stage startups developing software-based products or services with commercial potential.

Applicants must meet the following conditions:

  • Registered business: The startup must be a legally registered entity founded on or after November 2, 2024.
  • Early-stage status: The startup must not have raised Series C funding or a later funding round.
  • Founder age: Individual entrants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Team size: A startup can register up to four official team members, subject to the competition rules.
  • Previous winners: Previous Imagine Cup winners are not eligible to participate.
  • Technology requirements: The submitted solution must meet the competition’s Microsoft technology and Azure requirements.

Student founders can apply through the Student Startup category if they meet its additional requirements. However, founders do not need to be students to enter the main competition.

The competition is global, but applicants must comply with the applicable US sanctions and export-control restrictions. Review the official rules before applying.

Competition Categories

Startups must select one category that best matches their solution, target customers and market. Each startup can submit only one entry.

1. Developer Tools

For products that help developers build, test, deploy, secure, manage or scale software and digital infrastructure.

2. Retail

For technology that improves retail operations, customer experiences, demand forecasting, inventory management or how brands understand their customers.

3. Healthcare and Life Sciences

For solutions that improve healthcare delivery, clinical operations, medical research, accessibility or patient outcomes.

4. Cybersecurity

For products that help organisations protect identities, data, applications, cloud infrastructure and AI systems.

5. Financial Services

For technology that helps financial institutions manage risk, improve customer services, strengthen security or deliver financial products more effectively.

6. Deep Tech and Physical AI

For startups developing advanced technologies that connect software and artificial intelligence with hardware, machines or physical systems.

7. Student Startup

A cross-industry category for eligible student-led ventures developing products or technical concepts with real-world commercial potential.

Applicants should select the category that most closely reflects their core product and customers, since it determines the judging panel and evaluation criteria.

What Makes a Competitive Application?

Microsoft is looking for startups that can demonstrate a clear customer problem, a differentiated solution and a credible route to commercial growth.

Applicants should be ready to explain:

  • The problem: What specific challenge does the product solve, and who experiences it?
  • The solution: How does the product work, and what makes it different from existing alternatives?
  • The market: Who are the target customers, and how large is the commercial opportunity?
  • Traction: What evidence shows that customers want or use the solution? This may include sales, deployments, partnerships or customer feedback.
  • The business model: How will the startup generate revenue and grow?
  • The technology: Which Microsoft technologies and Azure services does the solution use, and how do they support its performance, security or scalability?
  • The team: Why is the team equipped to build the product and execute its growth plan?

The judging process considers the startup’s business profile, market opportunity, product and technical approach, customer value, innovation and ability to execute. A strong pitch should support its claims with evidence rather than relying on broad promises about future growth.

Documents and Materials Required

Applicants should prepare the following before starting the online application:

  • Startup name, website, founding date, headquarters and primary markets.
  • Founder and team details, including an authorised representative.
  • A pitch deck explaining the product, business model, market opportunity and traction.
  • A product demonstration video lasting two to three minutes.
  • An Azure architecture diagram or technical overview.
  • Written responses to the application questions.
  • A Microsoft for Startups account and a valid Azure Subscription ID associated with the startup and submitted solution.

The competition’s published Azure requirements also specify at least 10 qualifying Azure workloads, with at least US$1 in spend for each qualifying workload, by the submission deadline. Applicants should review the current official rules and Azure guidance carefully to confirm the applicable requirements before submitting.

All required materials must be submitted through Award Force by the deadline. Saving an application without completing the submission process does not count as an entry.
