Apple Inc. is downsizing its workforce across key software and hardware divisions, laying off more than 200 employees as part of a broader strategic pivot toward next-generation artificial intelligence and upcoming smart wearable devices.
The workforce reductions target teams within Apple’s software engineering division—specifically those working on the Siri digital assistant and the Intelligent Systems Experience group—as well as specialized teams assigned to the Vision Pro spatial computer.
Shift Toward AI Realignment
Approximately 100 positions were eliminated within the Siri and core software development groups. According to internal sources, the job cuts stem from Apple’s ongoing overhaul of Siri’s underlying technical architecture. The transition to an AI-infused digital assistant requires new engineering skill sets, prompting the tech giant to reallocate internal resources and eliminate legacy roles while creating new AI-focused positions.
Similar operational realignments hit the Intelligent Systems Experience team, which manages device-level AI features. As generative AI functionality expands across Apple’s application suite, the company is restructuring engineering personnel to prioritize high-impact AI capabilities.
Strategic Retreat on Vision Pro Content and Gaming
The remaining 100 layoffs affect Apple’s Vision Products Group. The company is largely dismantling its dedicated Vision Pro gaming team and downsizing its internal immersive video production unit.
While 3D immersive video served as a cornerstone marketing feature for the $3,699 spatial headset, in-house production costs—often reaching millions of dollars per episode—proved difficult to justify given the device’s niche user base. Apple plans to shift toward third-party content partnerships for future immersive experiences while maintaining a scaled-back internal production footprint.
Apple reassured employees that visionOS and the Vision Pro platform are not being abandoned, though near-term hardware priorities have reportedly shifted toward lightweight smart glasses.
In an official statement, Apple confirmed the structural adjustments, “We are realigning some of our teams to evolve our business to deliver the best experiences for our users. While we will create new roles as part of this change, it will also impact a limited number of existing roles. We are grateful to these team members for their contributions, and we are committed to supporting them throughout their transition.”
Affected employees are being given opportunities to apply for alternative open positions within the company.
