Silicon Motion unveils SSD reference design for AI infrastructure

TAIPEI, Taiwan – Silicon Motion Technology Corp. has introduced an enterprise solid-state drive reference design kit designed to support artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure workloads, including key-value cache offload for AI inference.

The MonTitan SSD Reference Design Kit incorporates the next generation of Silicon Motion’s PerformaShape technology, a workload-management architecture designed to provide more predictable quality of service as multiple workloads compete for SSD resources.

AI inference systems can generate large key-value caches as models process and retain context during multi-step interactions. Offloading portions of that cache to storage can add a persistent data tier, but it introduces storage-performance requirements involving throughput, latency, quality of service, and endurance.

Silicon Motion says the latest PerformaShape architecture adds multi-dimensional shaping for more precise workload management. The technology combines workload shaping with integrated performance monitoring and the NVMe TP4176 quality-of-service interface to manage storage resources under changing workloads.

NVM Express TP4176 defines mechanisms for controlling and managing quality of service for PCIe bandwidth and I/O operations per second. The specification provides standardized controls for allocating storage performance to workloads with different requirements.

Silicon Motion’s approach is intended for multi-tenant and multi-agent environments in which several AI workloads can generate different and rapidly changing I/O patterns. Rather than optimizing an SSD only for peak throughput, workload shaping can control how storage resources are allocated among competing operations.

PerformaShape is implemented in Silicon Motion’s SM8366 PCIe 5.0 and SM8466 PCIe 6.0 enterprise SSD controllers. The SM8366 is a 16-channel PCIe Gen5 x4 NVMe controller designed for enterprise and data-center storage applications, while the SM8466 provides a PCIe Gen6 platform for the same class of applications.

The MonTitan RDK provides SSD manufacturers with a development platform for building enterprise storage products for AI servers and data centers. Silicon Motion says the reference design can help manufacturers reduce development time for storage products intended for AI infrastructure.

The MonTitan RDK is intended for SSD manufacturers developing storage products for AI servers and data centers. Silicon Motion says the platform provides a scalable foundation for those designs while shortening development cycles.
