Police are investigating after a 67-year-old woman who had been reported missing was found dead inside a suitcase that was brought to a fire station in Kansas.
Lorretta M. Moody was identified as the woman. Her death is being investigated as a homicide, the Wichita Police Department said in a statement.
Police responded on Sept. 16 at about 6:25 p.m. after two people arrived at Wichita Fire Station 22 with the suitcase and reported that a body was inside. Moody was pronounced dead on the scene.
The two people were interviewed, the police department said. Police haven’t identified them or released information about whether they knew Moody.
Police initially said they believed they knew the identity of the woman inside the suitcase and were working to confirm whether she was a woman who had been reported missing. They confirmed her identity in an announcement on Sept. 18.
“Investigators are continuing to interview individuals, review evidence, and work to establish a complete timeline of events,” the police department said.
There was no apparent threat to the public, police said.

Wichita Police spokesperson Andrew Ford told USA TODAY that police had received a missing person’s report on Moody in the early morning hours of Sept. 16 at about 1:50 a.m. local time.
