Energy Minister Gottipati Ravi Kumar has directed the officials to remain on high alert in view of the ongoing spell of heavy rains across North Andhra districts under the influence of the deep depression in the Bay of Bengal.
In a tele-conference with top officials of the Energy Department, including those from the AP Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited (APEPDCL), on Wednesday, Mr. Ravi Kumar said widespread rains were being reported from Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, and Visakhapatnam districts due to the deep depression, and there was possibility of heavy rains and gales causing significant damage to electricity poles, lines, and transformers, resulting in power supply disruptions.
He advised the officials to take preventive measures and emphasised that they should anticipate the conditions in advance in order to minimise the likely damages. He noted that while rains were welcome for farmers and the public, the Energy Department should be extra vigilant as weather formations in the Bay of Bengal could wreak havoc with the power supply infrastructure. In particular, he instructed the officials to focus on low-lying areas and coastal regions that were vulnerable to extensive damages.
Mr. Ravi Kumar ordered that restoration works be undertaken on a war-footing and keep necessary staff, vehicles, equipment, extra poles, and other materials ready in advance for that purpose. He instructed that special teams be formed to immediately respond to any contingency. Top priority should be given to preventing deaths due to electrocution that could be caused by damaged power lines and other equipment, he added.
