Google tests AI-led phone calling via Gemini on Pixel smartphones

Google is testing a new Gemini feature that can make phone calls to businesses on a user’s behalf, bringing AI a step closer to handling everyday tasks through voice calls.

Called “Call for Me,” the experiment is currently available to a limited group of users in the US. It is restricted to Pixel 11 owners aged 18 or above who have a Google AI subscription and are running the Public Beta version of the Phone by Google app along with the latest Gemini app.

Users can ask Gemini to handle tasks such as booking a restaurant reservation, checking whether a product is in stock or making or rescheduling an appointment. Before placing the call, Gemini presents a summary of the request and then dials the business using the user’s own phone number.

Google says the AI identifies itself at the start of every call, making it clear that an AI assistant is calling on the user’s behalf and that the conversation is being recorded. Users can follow the interaction through a live transcript or audio and can take over the call whenever needed. Gemini announces the handoff before leaving the conversation.

The feature is also designed to deal with automated phone systems, allowing Gemini to navigate phone menus and handle routine queries without requiring the user to stay on the line.

However, Google has placed some limits on what Gemini can do. Call for Me cannot make emergency calls, complete financial transactions or share sensitive personal information.

Google is starting the feature as a small-scale experiment, noting that real-world conversations can be nuanced and that the company wants to refine the experience before considering a wider rollout.

The move builds on Google’s earlier experiments with AI-powered phone calls. Its “Ask for Me” feature allowed Gemini to call businesses to enquire about pricing, while Pixel’s “Hold for Me” has helped users navigate automated phone systems and wait on hold. With Call for Me, Google is expanding that idea from handling individual parts of a phone call to completing an entire task on the user’s behalf.
