As the teams faced off for the first time in the format since the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Breetzke breezed to an ultimately match-winning century to help the Proteas post 297/8.
A contentious moment came deep into the innings, when Breetzke and partner Marco Jansen ran an overthrow following a shy at the stumps from Australian wicket-keeper Josh Inglis.
Inglis’ throw hit Breetzke, though with no fielder in the eyes of South Africa’s batters in the vicinity of fielding the ball had it missed the batter, the running pair felt they were within their rights to nick an extra run.
Breetzke was quick to play down the animated discussions on field, admitting he understood both sides of the argument.
“I was just in the moment, to be honest,” Breetzke said in the post-match press conference.
“If that’s in a World Cup, I’m probably going to do that again. If I was on the fielding side, I would be giving the batter hell as well, so it’s just part of the game.”
