Mohit Sharma is set to join the Chennai Super Kings as the team’s new bowling coach. The 38-year-old, who has formerly played four seasons for CSK, will take over the role from Eric Simmons, who served in that role under former head coach Stephen Fleming.
Cricbuzz understands that Mohit will officially put pen to paper on his deal to become the first to join newly-appointed head coach Zaheer Khan’s team of support staff. “Zaheer is in the process of finalising the support staff. He seems to have zeroed in on Mohit for the bowling coach role. That is my understanding,” said CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan to Cricbuzz.
Mohit, who also played eight T20Is for India, played in the IPL as recently as the 2025 season before announcing his retirement from all forms of the game in December last year. He played 48 times for CSK in the IPL with 10 more appearances coming across two seasons of the now-defunct Champions League T20.
CSK and Zaheer are yet to finalise the identity of their batting coach for the 2027 season. Michael Hussey, who was also understood to be in the running for the head coach role, has served in that capacity until this season. It is learnt that there are three or four names in conversation with a final decision still to be taken.
CSK won the last of their five championships in 2023 and have failed to qualify for the playoffs in each of the last three seasons, resulting in the team parting ways with their long-standing head coach Stephen Fleming earlier this year.
