Cricket news 2026, Chris Lynn cocaine ban in England, BBL future in doubt

Veteran Aussie cricketer Chris Lynn served a one-month ban for using cocaine recently.

Lynn was banned from playing professional cricket for all of August, but the suspension was not publicly known until the English cricket regulator reported and media outlets picked it up it on Friday morning.

The 36-year-old tested positive to benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, during an anti-doping test on July 18.

He was representing T20 Blast team Northants at the time.

Lynn travelled from England to Sri Lanka after the Blast finished, to play in the Lanka Premier League.

He played just one game before being ruled out with a leg injury, and then his suspension was imposed.

Lynn confirmed he had used cocaine “during a period of several hours across the evening of 15 July 2026 and into the early hours of 16 July 2026”.

Earlier that night Lynn retired hurt during Northants’ quarter final win in the Blast.

Lynn escaped a more serious penalty given the regulator agreed he had used cocaine out of competition, and it did not impact his performance.

The regular proposed a three-month ban but it was reduced to one if Lynn underwent a treatment program, which he did.

Lynn has not played any professional cricket since his injury in Sri Lanka.

He is yet to sign with any Big Bash League team for the upcoming Australian season, although News Corp reported this week the Melbourne Renegades were poised to sign him.

Lynn played four one-day internationals and 18 Twenty internationals for Australia but has not represented the country since 2018.
