HARARE, Zimbabwe – A brilliant 151* for Cade Carmichael and a stylish century for Tim Tector has set Ireland Wolves up to push for a final day win, despite stubborn resistance at the end of the day by Zimbabwe A.
Starting the day with a lead of 163 runs with all 10 second innnigs wickets intact, Ireland Wolves lost opener Stephen Doheny (10) early driving at a tempting ball outside off which moved enough to brush the outside edge of Doheny’s bat and fly to first slip.
Jake Egan (9) and Carmichael then steadied the innings and began to build on the already substantial lead. However, with the score on 44-1, Egan tucked a ball off his hip and set off for a quick single. Carmichael saw the danger of bowler Dion Myers sprinting to the ball, and called no. Unfortunately, Egan was too far down the wicket to turn back safely and he was run out.
Chris De Freitas (14) then joined Carmichael to add 27 more, but De Freitas fell caught behind leaving the Wolves 71-3 in the 19th over – an overall lead of 234 runs. Zimbabwe’s bowling unit saw a possible way back into the match and began to tighten their line and target the new batter, Tector.
What hope the home side had, however, was soon snuffed out as Carmichael and Tector set about compiling a 224-run partnership in the next 50 overs. The run rate was steady, but the batters relentless in their determination to drive the Zimbabweans out of the game.
Just after drinks in the middle session, Carmichael brought up his second First-Class century off 139 balls, striking 9 fours and a six along the way.
Tector followed suit after Tea with a patient century off 162 balls in only his second First-Class match, but fell soon after for 105 playing a wild shot to long on, which indicated that a declaration was near and the batters had the directive to pile on the misery.
Two further wickets fell, then the Wolves called time on their innings – the declaration on 306-6 left Zimbabwe A with the mammoth task of scoring 470 in just over a day to win.
Liam McCarthy snared a wicket late in the day, but some stubborn batting by the home side averted any further losses and at the close of play Zimbabwe A was 61-1, needing a further 409 runs to win.
