The U.S. opened the game’s scoring amidst a fast-paced opening period. With 5:55 remaining in the first, Maggie Scannell (Wynantskill, N.Y./University of Wisconsin) forced a turnover behind the net, sending a pass to Chloe Boreen (Somerset, Wis./University of St. Thomas) who redirected a tip pass behind Canada’s goalie, to take a 1-0 lead.
In the closing moments of the first, Canada capitalized on a power play when Claire Murdoch received a stretch pass, tucking a breakaway shot behind Ava McNaughton’s (Seven Fields, Pa./University of Wisconsin) outstretched pads, knotting the game at 1-1.
Cassie Hall (South Lyon, Mich./University of Wisconsin) gave Team USA a 2-1 lead with 11:08 left in the second, sniping the top corner from the high slot in the final seconds of a U.S. power play.
Later in the second, Canada had 37 seconds of a 5-on-3 power play, but Team USA’s defense held strong, killing off both extra-skater chances.
Boreen’s second of the night came in the late stages of the second, capitalizing on a backdoor pass that was lifted over the goalie’s glove on the power play.
Midway through the third, Canada scored its second of the game, another on a breakaway, to pull within 3-2, but Laney Potter (Cranberry Township, Pa./University of Wisconsin) converted on a power play with 8:13 remaining to reopen a two-goal lead at 4-2.
