Gartner: CPOs Must Manage AI, not Just Suppliers

As AI reshapes where enterprise expertise and capability sit, Gartner says Chief Procurement Officers (CPOs) must move beyond managing suppliers to managing AI capabilities directly.

As decisions around AI sourcing increasingly determine where enterprise intelligence, expertise and capability sit, CPOs need to think beyond managing suppliers and start managing AI capabilities themselves, according to Gartner, a business and technology insights company.

With AI now woven into software, services, infrastructure and autonomous agents, CPOs’ influence extends well beyond supplier selection. Increasingly, they are helping determine how work gets done, where expertise sits and how the enterprise builds future capability.

Katarzyna Fonteyn, Director Analyst, IT Services, in Gartner’s Supply Chain practice, says: “Organisations are no longer acquiring AI through a single supplier market or spend category.

“AI capabilities are being purchased across the enterprise, often without a unified view of how those investments relate to one another. Treating AI as a dedicated category management domain helps organisations improve visibility, strengthen governance and make more deliberate decisions about where critical capabilities should reside.”
