There’s still plenty of time to enjoy a summertime treat—after all, it’s not technically fall until September 22 this year. But if you partake in a classic New England summer, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just published information on the latest ice cream recall that they say was initiated on August 14.
Based in Skowhegan, Maine, Gifford’s Dairy has reportedly recalled a total of 3,585 one-quart containers of its HomeMaine ice cream brand’s Power Play Fudge flavor.
The trigger for the recall was “Potential foreign object contamination: rubber pieces,” according to the FDA. Though details aren’t confirmed, this may have come from production equipment that broke off into the recipe during processing.
Is your ice cream affected?
Customers or accounts that purchased the product may identify the recalled ice cream by reported lot code of 26184, plus a “best by” date of 08/27/27. Product UPC is listed as 8 60864 00030 7.
The FDA report says product was distributed into Massachusetts, Maine, and Vermont. A store locator on their site shows the Power Play Fudge flavor—an apparent tribute to Bruins hockey, including “fudge-filled chocolate ‘pucks’”—sold through retailers such as Hannaford, Shaws, and possibly others.
FDA assigns risk level
On Wednesday, August 19, the FDA classified the event as a Class II recall. This means their experts have determined it as “a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
On the company’s website, Gifford’s calls itself a fifth-generation ice cream producer, sourcing milk and fruit locally. The company reports having three family-owned and operated stands, and “over 2 million gallons of ice cream in grocery stores, independent ice cream shops, colleges, universities, and restaurants.”
This latest incident follows the Dairy Queen ingredient recall earlier this summer in a nearby U.S. region.
