Nagpur/Wardha: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and quantum computing would reshape every sphere, including medicine, and universities must move beyond teaching to become centres of innovation.Addressing the graduating students of Adani Institute of Higher Education and Research (AIHER), a deemed-to-be university, during its 17th convocation, the CM pointed out that emerging technologies were transforming medical diagnosis and treatment, making procedures more precise and increasingly non-invasive.AI, the CM said, was enabling earlier detection of diseases and improving treatment outcomes, while advances in technology and drug discovery were reshaping cancer care. The convocation was held at the Wardha campus of AIHER. Fadnavis became the first recipient of an honorary Doctor of Letters (DLitt) of AIHER in recognition of his contribution to public life. “The future of medicine is new and personalised,” Fadnavis said, stressing the need for greater research into non-communicable diseases, nutrition, maternal health, stunting and wasting.“India is facing a growing burden of lifestyle-related diseases, including diabetes and cancer. At the same time, stunting and wasting remained a concern despite a decline in their numbers. Research in nutrition and maternal and child health must ensure that scientific advances reach vulnerable sections, including people in remote areas,” he said, adding that the next major drug or medical technology should emerge from a university. He also emphasised empathy and compassion in an increasingly technology-driven world. “What differentiates us from artificial intelligence and robots is compassion and empathy,” he said.Fadnavis congratulated National Medical Commission (NMC) chairperson Dr Abhijat Sheth, who was conferred an honorary Doctor of Science (DSc) at the convocation, and praised his work in transforming medical education through greater transparency and reforms. He also congratulated AIHER for resolving to invest Rs 1,000 crore over the next five years and praised its work in research, startups and innovation.Urging graduates to continue learning, Fadnavis said they must be prepared to “learn, unlearn and relearn”. He also called upon them to give back to society. “The definition of success is not how much money you earn. It is defined by how much you are able to give back,” he said.
