Collaboration between IT and business teams is key to AI success

No Jitter Brief:

  • Collaboration between IT and business teams is important for AI success, according to a recent Alteryx study of 1,400 IT leaders. The report says that 71% of respondents think this strategy is the most effective.

  • Despite this clear majority, there’s still some debate over who should have ownership over different parts of AI initiatives. The toss-up is mainly between IT and business teams. When it comes to who should set AI strategies and priorities, 37% said IT and tech leaders, while 28% said executive leadership.

  • Additionally, 38% believe IT or tech leaders should manage and deliver AI, while 21% said data and analytics teams should take charge. When it comes to who should be defining AI requirements, 30% said business units and 21% said IT or tech leaders.

No Jitter Insight:

“The ownership of AI initiatives remains challenging because the office of the CIO and the business units in an organization move at different speeds, propelled by very different incentives,” said Alessandro Perilli, vice president of enterprise AI strategies at IDC.

While the majority (71%) of respondents in the Alteryx study agreed that IT and business teams should work together, there is still some debate over which parts of the process they should own. A notable outlier was the management of day-to-day production for AI and agentic AI, which 66% of respondents said should be managed at the line-of-business level. The report also notes that access to the data AI runs on remains the responsibility of IT or data teams (38%). Only 18% of business users have full self-service access to cloud data.

The report said another concern is inadequate governance. Currently, 34% of organizations are worried their employees are using shadow AI, or unsanctioned AI tools, without IT’s approval or knowledge.
