A Delta Airlines flight from Los Angeles to Boston was diverted to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport after a captain became ill Tuesday , officials said.
The plane made an emergency landing at 5:43 p.m., Delta Airline said in an email
The captain radioed air traffic control to let them know he needed to land the plane, according to an audio recording posted on Facebook by Flight Simulator Fantasy, which tracks real air traffic control audio recordings.
“This is the captain, I’m the one that’s ill,” he said in the audio. “I’m going to taxi the jet to the gate, and then I need to go to the hospital.”
Neither Delta, the Detroit airport, not the FAA identified the captain, saying only that a “crew member” had taken ill.
The Federal Aviation Administration said that a crewmember had a medical emergency, a spokesperson said in an email to the Globe.
The plane landed safely at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport at about 5:30 p.m., the spokesperson said.
There were 147 people on board at the time, Delta Air Lines said in a statement. The flight landed safely in Detroit.
Firefighters responded to a report of a person having a medical situation on the flight, Cortez Strickland, a spokesman for the Wayne County Airport Authority said in an email.
The person was taken to the hospital, Strickland said.
A new crew was assigned to the flight and the plane departed for Boston, Delta said.
It departed at 7:17 p.m. and landed at Logan International Airport at 9:04 p.m., Delta said.
“We apologize to our customers for this disruption in their travels,” Delta said.
