The Philadelphia Eagles officially announced five transactions on Tuesday evening. Here’s an overview:
Let’s sort through this news on a player-by-player basis.
Steele, a preseason fan favorite, recently got called up to the roster after beginning the season on the practice squad. With the Eagles missing their top three running backs due to injury, Steele entered Week 6 as RB2 behind Dameon Pierce.
Steele suffered a shoulder injury on his first and only touch of the season, a reception for four yards. He re-entered the game after getting banged up but then left again.
Bummer to see him get hurt just as he was getting an opportunity to play.
If Steele clears waivers, he will revert to the Eagles’ injured reserve list.
The Eagles signed Blue, a fifth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 2025 NFL Draft, to their practice squad on the last day of August. They then signed him to their roster this past Friday to be a third running back behind Pierce and Steele. But even with Steele getting banged up early on, the Eagles did not trust Blue to play any snaps for them (offense or special teams).
Maybe the Eagles will bring him back on the practice squad if he clears waivers. Maybe not.
The Eagles signed Brockermeyer to their practice squad earlier this month, right around when they traded Cam Jurgens to the Baltimore Ravens. He was around to provide more center depth.
But with Drew Kendall presumably getting healthier, the team apparently deemed Brockermeyer expendable.
The Eagles signed Wheeler to their practice squad last week to give them more running back depth in practice. But now they’re going with Mitchell, who offers more NFL experience, instead.
Mitchell brings experience to the table with 327 career rushing attempts for 1,523 yards (4.7 average) and nine touchdowns.
He was previously with the Eagles in training camp before getting hurt. The team placed him on injured reserve and later waived him with an injury settlement.
Mitchell is now back in Philly to give the Eagles more running back depth. It’s currently unclear if Saquon Barkley will be ready to return from his hamstring injury in Week 7. If not, Dameon Pierce is currently the only healthy running back on the Eagles’ roster with Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley on injured reserve.
Depending on Barkley’s status, Mitchell could be temporarily elevated from the practice squad to serve as RB2 or RB3 on Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys.
