FanCode has bagged the streaming rights for the Japan-India Twenty20 International, even as some major global players remain in the race for the international digital rights. A decision on the television rights is expected within the next 24 hours, with Sony, Star and Zee in talks.
FanCode, which has been working closely with the Japan Cricket Association (JCA) on pathway cricket, has secured the rights to stream the September 22 game in India. The match will be played at Sano International Stadium in Tochigi Prefecture, with the first ball scheduled for 9.30am IST.
Meanwhile, it is understood that YouTube and Netflix may enter the fray for the global rights to the game. JioHotstar, which recently expanded its service globally, may also be among the potential bidders.
The interest of the major players for the one-off game, to be played concurrently with the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, is because of the backing of the governments of India and Japan for the game. The international fixture will launch the celebration of 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations.
The rights were taken from ITW Universe, which has officially secured the exclusive global sports production, broadcast distribution, and commercial marketing rights for the historic one-off T20I match.
According to a media release, as part of this comprehensive mandate, ITW Universe holds full ownership of the broadcast feed and commercial inventory for the landmark fixture. “Held alongside the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, the match presents an unprecedented opportunity to take Indian cricket into a new market and build long-term visibility in Japan.” a media statement from the organisers said.
“Bringing the Indian cricket team to Japanese soil for this historic T20I is a defining milestone for the growth of cricket in Japan. Partnering with ITW Universe ensures that this fixture will be produced and marketed to the highest global standards, giving fans in Japan, India, and around the world a top-tier viewing experience while inspiring a whole new generation of cricket enthusiasts in our country,” Naoki Alex Miyaji, CEO, Japan Cricket Association (JCA), said.
“Securing the exclusive rights for this historic match is a proud milestone for ITW Universe. India playing Japan on Japanese soil for the very first time is a monumental moment for global cricket.
