Abhiram Yadav, chairman of the Persatuan Cricket Indonesia (Indonesia Cricket Association), is a contender in the election to the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Chief Executives Committee (CEC). He is one of four candidates believed to be in the fray for one of the three CEC positions reserved for the Associate boards. The ICC is yet to announce the date of the election, but it is expected to be held in the next couple of weeks.
On Monday (September 14), the ICC is likely to announce the names of the contesting candidates. Cricbuzz understands that Sarah Gomersall, Chief Executive Officer of Jersey Cricket; Rashid Khan of Netherlands Cricket (KNCB); and Vignesh Sankaran, vice-president of Germany’s Deutscher Cricket Bund, are the other candidates. Nominations for the positions closed on September 4.
Being the only candidate from Asia and the Asia-Pacific regions, Yadav’s chances are believed to be strong – the other three are from Europe. An electoral college of 43 Associate members consisting of 14 votes from Asia, six from East Asia Pacific, 10 from Europe, 11 from Africa and two from Americas will elect the new CEC member. Two voting Associates – USA and Canada – are under suspension and hence cannot participate in the voting.
“From one Associate, for every Associate. I am ready to listen, ready to learn and ready to serve,” Yadav told Cricbuzz. “Indonesia has given me experience of what it means to build cricket, but every Associate has its own journey. Before assuming what Members need, we have to listen and understand their realities.”
The elected candidate will take the place of Gurumurthy Palani, who vacated the CEC after being elected to the ICC Board earlier in July. About 10 months remain in the current two-year term for the three Associate members on the CEC. Fresh elections will be held at next year’s annual conference.
