San Diego Padres infielder Luis Rengifo suffered an injury during a game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Rengifo has a right knee sprain, according to the Padres. He will receive treatment and will return to San Diego, where he will be evaluated further.
The Padres will finish out the weekend series against the Rays on Sunday, Aug. 30 before starting a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds on Monday, Aug. 31.
How did Luis Rengifo get injured?
Rengifo was carted off the field after attempting to throw to home plate in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The throw was off target and went past home plate. Rengifo could not put weight on his right leg and was clearly in pain.
The Rays went on to secure the 7-6 victory over the Padres after scoring four runs in the bottom of the seventh.
The eight-year veteran signed with the Padres as a free agent at the end of June after the Milwaukee Brewers released him. He spent the first seven years of his career with the Los Angeles Angels.
Rengifo has scored 37 runs while driving in 36 runs and hitting four home runs this season.
