Meta’s AI test
Meta’s landmark $18 billion settlement over allegations that Facebook and Instagram harmed children’s mental health places unusual emphasis on one challenge: determining which users are minors.
The agreement, reached with 48 states, the District of Columbia and US territories, gives Meta a year to strengthen age-assurance technology. The company says the measures could eventually become industry standards.
Meta already accepts government IDs for age checks, promising to delete them within 30 days. But technology companies increasingly are turning to artificial intelligence to estimate users’ ages without requiring identity documents. Instagram’s AI examines clues including posts about birthdays or school, accounts followed, likes, comments, browsing nalyzin and login times. Meta has also said its systems analyse photographs for visual indicators such as height and bone structure.PTI
