Police in Bend, Oregon, have provided a timeline of the Oct. 15 shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School that left five people, including the shooter, 16-year-old Griffin J. John II, dead.
In a press conference Oct. 16, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said that a teacher and three children, ages 5, 8 and 11, were killed in the shooting; a 7-year-old child and another teacher were being treated at hospitals for injuries.
Two of the victims were identified as 5-year-old student Rhoam Summer and 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert.
In the same news conference, Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said that she was heartbroken after the shooting and thanked the civilian who pursued and fatally shot the assailant. The civilian, a father at the school, was identified by family members to multiple news outlets as Kaylub Giamanco, 36.
What happened within a few hectic minutes?
According to Krantz, the shooter jumped a fence on the school property at around 12:58 p.m. local time. While doing that, John was confronted by a bystander, later identified as Giamanco.
After being confronted, John is said to have shot at the bystander, who called authorities. Krantz said that the call came in to dispatchers at around 12:59 p.m. local time.
Krantz said that John used a shotgun to fire his way into a side entrance that led to a classroom, where he is said to have fired at least 15 rounds inside the room.
Giamanco is believed to have followed John into the school, where he heard the shooter and saw him in a “physical struggle” with a teacher. He then shot the assailant dead.
Krantz said the teacher had thrown “herself on top of the suspect and tackled him,” slowing the attack and allowing Giamanco time to shoot him.
Police arrived at the school at around 1:02 p.m. local time, Krantz added.
