Two glider planes collided in midair in upstate New York on Sept. 18, killing one of the pilots, authorities said.
New York State Police responded to the crash at about 2:26 p.m. ET Friday in Edinburg, a town in Saratoga County near Great Sacandaga Lake in eastern New York.
After the collision, one of the planes was able to land safely at nearby Plateau Sky Ranch Airport. Its pilot was uninjured, state police said.
After more than two hours of searching, state police said the debris from the second glider was discovered in a remote area of Edinburg at about 4:54 p.m. The second glider’s pilot, who was the only person on board, was discovered dead at the crash scene, state police said.
The deceased pilot’s name was not released pending notification of family members.
The Federal Aviation Administration said both gliders had only their pilots on board at the time of the incident.
The gliders involved were a Schempp-Hirth Ventus-2B and a Schleicher ASW 24, according to the National Transportation Safety Board, which said in a statement that it was investigating the collision. Glider planes generally do not have an engine, and are designed to use the forces of lift, drag and weight to remain aloft.
