South Africa fight back to keep Durban Test in balance | ICC World Test Championship

The Proteas were dismissed for 284 in their first innings, with Australia reaching 33/0 at stumps on the third day with an overall lead of 139 runs.

The Aussies batted for just 5.4 overs in the final session before bad light stopped play, with Nic Maddinson (17*) and Travis Head (10*) the unbeaten batters as the visitors made their intention clear that they were on the lookout for quick runs.

South Africa batting coach Ashwell Prince believes the Test is still in the balance and his side may try a few different tactics on Monday upon resumption in an attempt to slow down the Aussies.

“We might see a lot more of what we saw this evening from their approach,” Prince noted.

“You’ve got to look to take wickets. At the same time, you’ve got to control the run rate.

“You might say, well, you’re trying to cover both ends. In the first innings, they put a big score up on the board, but they went at 2.8 runs and over, 2.9 runs and over.

“We’ll see a few more of the spinners tomorrow. Maybe a few innovative field placings and put the ball in their court to come and play.”
