The crisis now has a legal dimension. Demands are mounting for clarity on the regulatory basis the Asian Football Confederation relied upon in postponing the match, and whether the decision complies with the tournament’s regulations.
Critics argue that the Saudi federation and Al-Nassr completed every arrangement needed to stage the fixture, so what happened demands a clear explanation. The refereeing team and the match commissioner had both arrived in Riyadh.
Talk of Al-Nassr claiming the points, or of Al-Wasl being deemed 3-0 losers, remains premature. It is not yet settled whether the relevant articles of the regulations apply here, nor whether officially recognised exceptional circumstances exist. Postponement does not automatically hand a defeat to the team unable to travel, and demanding the points does not guarantee getting them. The outcome depends on the evidence, the procedures and the decisions of the competent authorities.
This is why an official clarification matters so much for Al-Nassr and the Saudi federation. They need to know the reasons for the postponement, the regulatory articles behind the decision, and the procedures available to appeal it should there be grounds to do so.
