This Delaware restaurant makes USA TODAY best pizza list

Joe loves it. Aubrey loves it. Surely, you have friends and family who either love it or eloquently articulate exactly why they don’t love it.

Outside of major chains like Pizza Hut and Domino’s, the most recognized pizzeria in Delaware is Grotto Pizza, which is also the most polarizing.

The place is so popular, it has attracted business from former president Joe Biden, who just stopped by in Wilmington in June, and Wilmington native Aubrey Plaza, who munched on Grotto Pizza in an October 2025 episode of “The Drew Barrymore Show” – alongside the show host and Delaware actor Valerie Bertinelli – in celebration of winning Delaware Online’s “Most Famous Delawarean” poll where readers voted for the winner. (Plaza also nameed Grotto as her pizza haunt in an interview with the New York Times about where she likes to go when back home.)

We recently included Grotto in a story offering 10 Delaware places to satisfy your pizza cravings. And now, Grotto is also in the spotlight thanks to this USA TODAY’s story: Where’s America’s best pizza? See our food writers’ recommendations.

The story includes intel on places across the country to score New York-style and Neapolitan. Detroit-style and Chicago-style. Bar pies and brick-oven pies. Celebrity-magnets and holes-in-the-wall.

So, make note for your next road trip. But meanwhile, there’s no place like home.

Grotto is adored for its signature swirl of red sauce on its plain cheese pies.

Founded in 1960 in Rehoboth Beach, Grotto Pizza has since grown into an empire with 16 locations around the state, with at least one in each county. The pizzeria also has two Maryland locations.
