Hubert Hurkacz (No. 39) qualified for the round of 16 at the ATP 500 tournament in Beijing by defeating Learner Tien, the world No. 15, in the first round.
The Pole, beaten two days ago in the Chengdu final, had to battle to get past the American, last year’s runner-up, after losing the first set.
Hurkacz eventually turned things around to win in three sets 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

After letting the first set slip away despite breaking first, Hurkacz regained control of the match in the second set by taking Tien’s serve at 3-2.
More efficient, he managed to make the difference in the important moments, notably at 5-4, breaking in the final set to secure his qualification.
Hurkacz fired 12 aces in total and won 93% of points behind his first serve in the final set.
He will now face Arthur Gea in the next round.
