A four-year-old golden retriever in San Diego appeared to have completely misunderstood his assignment when an intruder broke into his family’s home.
Instead of barking, chasing him away or raising the alarm, the pet dog, named Nash, repeatedly brought the unfamiliar man his toys as he hoped he was there to play.
According to a report by the New York Post, the bizarre encounter unfolded earlier this month at a home in Sherman Heights, just east of downtown San Diego.
Homeowner Dante Rowley and his family were away when they began watching the strange scene unfold through their home security app.
The intruder entered the house by climbing a ladder to an open second-storey window. Once inside, he appeared to settle in rather comfortably, taking off his shoes and shirt before sitting on a bench in the foyer and helping himself to yogurt, turkey and cheese from the refrigerator.
He then spent around 30 minutes inside the house and even took a nap. But while the situation was understandably alarming for the family, Nash seemed to have a completely different interpretation of what was happening.
The security footage showed Nash approaching the man with a toy in his mouth, apparently inviting him to play. And the dog did not seem to give up easily. He returned with a toy multiple times, approaching the intruder again and again.

Rowley told NBC 7, as reported by the New York Post, that the family’s immediate concern had been making sure their dogs were safe. He admitted that Nash was “not the greatest guard dog” and said they had expected him to bark at a stranger, but he did the exact opposite.
The dog’s friendliness continued even when the cops arrived. Rather than treating the officers as suspicious strangers, Nash greeted them at the door with a toy in his mouth, apparently ready to make yet another friend.
The intruder, however, was less interested in meeting anyone as he attempted to flee through a bathroom window but found police officers waiting outside in the backyard. He was subsequently handcuffed and arrested.
Meanwhile, footage of Nash repeatedly offering toys to the intruder found its way onto social media, where viewers appeared torn between finding the situation alarming and being amused by the golden retriever’s unusually welcoming nature.
Some users joked that Nash seemed more interested in protecting his toys than his house, while others simply praised him for being the “good boy” he apparently believed himself to be.
