A jet skier was reported missing late Sunday, Aug. 16, spurring a search in Southern California that has turned up the watercraft — not the rider — as of early Monday, Aug. 17.
Emergency calls for reports of two missing jet skiers came in at about 10 p.m. Aug. 16, Long Beach Fire Department Capt. Jack Crabtree told the USA TODAY Network. Long Beach Fire, Long Beach Police Department and the U.S. Coast Guard began an active search, he said.
About a half hour later, authorities rescued a woman described as being in her 40s after receiving another report that a female could be heard yelling for help, according to Crabtree. He said she’d been transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
The search continued for a male jet skier.
As of the early hours of Monday, Aug. 17, authorities located two jet skis, according to Crabtree, but no second person.
Crabtree, who said the Coast Guard has taken the lead on the incident, did not have any further updates. The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to the USA TODAY Network’s inquiry on the status of the search as of the morning of Aug. 17, including whether the missing jet skier has been found.
According to details shared with first responders, the missing jet skiers were part of a larger group that went out for a ride, Crabtree said.
