Star Indian cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi threw away his wicket in the Duleep Trophy final against South Zone, a while after opposition skipper Tilak Varma was seen and heard sledging the youngster, at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, September 6.
Sooryavanshi, the East Zone vice-captain, made a blazing start to his innings, taking the South Zone bowlers to the cleaners at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The highlight of his innings was his fearless approach against seasoned India pacer Mohammed Siraj, whom Sooryavanshi took to the cleaners in the early stages. He also made the most of Varma’s defensive field settings, finding the gaps with precision.
Sooryavanshi smashed two boundaries and a six in one over from Siraj, prompting Varma to take the pacer out of the attack.
Sooryavanshi, who will soon be in action in the three-match T20I series against Afghanistan, lost his wicket to Chama V Milind while closing in on his fifty. But it came only after Sooryavanshi and Abhimanyu Easwaran had put on 100 runs for the opening wicket.
Tilak’s tactics were tough to comprehend as he opened up the field right from the beginning, allowing Sooryavanshi to rotate the strike with ease and clear the fielders for fours.
At one stage, Tilak decided to take matters into his own hands and was caught on the stump mic attempting to get under Sooryavanshi’s skin. “Kya yaar ye vice-captain (What is this vice-captain)?” Tilak was heard saying.
The other East Zone opener, Easwaran, matched Sooryavanshi shot for shot and even outscored the youngster. The seasoned Bengal batter got to his fifty first, beating the 15-year-old to the milestone.
Speaking of Sooryavanshi, the youngster had also missed out on a hundred in the semifinal against Central Zone, falling for 92 in the first innings. But his contribution was enough to help the Ishan Kishan-led East Zone book their place in the final.
