Cricket’s commercial machinery is warming up well ahead of the first ball. As India prepares for its first-ever tour of Afghanistan — a three-match T20I series billed as the Friendship Cup — media and production house ITW Universe, working alongside TCM, has moved quickly to line up brand partners around the property, signalling that the series’ significance extends beyond the cricketing calendar.
Valvoline has signed on as Presenting Sponsor, and Spinny, India’s No. 1 pre-owned car marketplace, continues its association with the property as Powered By partner — an early indicator, industry watchers say, of the commercial appetite building around a fixture that carries as much diplomatic weight as sporting interest.
The series will be played on September 13, 15 and 17 at the Arun Jaitley Cricket Stadium in New Delhi, forming part of Afghanistan’s Future Tours Programme. Beyond the scoreline, it marks a notable moment in the two countries’ cricketing relationship, with Afghanistan’s rise as a competitive T20 side in recent years adding context to what is otherwise a rare bilateral fixture.
Three consecutive international T20I matches in the national capital give brands an unusually concentrated window — a live, high-engagement environment where cricket, fan sentiment and brand storytelling intersect over a short span. For ITW Universe, which holds the exclusive media rights and production mandate for the series, that window is central to the pitch it is making to advertisers: this is a chance to be built into the property’s narrative, not just its ad breaks.
The company’s mandate covers media rights, broadcast production, sports marketing and commercial partnerships, with its teams responsible for delivering the series’ media and production experience. The early sign-ups from Valvoline and Spinny, executives say, represent only the first phase of a broader commercial ecosystem still taking shape.
Bhairav Shanth, co-founder, ITW Universe, said: “The India-Afghanistan Friendship Cup is more than a three-match cricketing contest. It brings together two cricketing nations with a growing sporting relationship and gives brands the opportunity to be part of a property with strong audience passion and relevance. We are delighted to welcome Valvoline as our Presenting Sponsor, along with our long-standing brand partner Spinny as the Powered By partner.
“The early response from the market has been extremely encouraging. We are seeing brands look beyond conventional sponsorship and explore how they can become part of the larger fan experience and storytelling around a sporting property. With the series now around the corner, we expect the commercial ecosystem around the Friendship Cup to continue to grow.”
Beyond Valvoline and Spinny, the property has also drawn Royal Stag, on board as Packaged Drinking Water Partner, and Groww, India’s No. 1 investment app — a spread of categories, from automotive to fintech to consumer goods, that reflects how international cricket continues to pull advertisers across sectors regardless of format or opponent. For ITW Universe, the task now is to translate that early commercial interest into integrations, content and fan experiences that go beyond the conventional logo-on-jersey approach — the kind of deeper brand storytelling it says the market is increasingly asking for.
