The Cyber Crime Police have apprehended online entrepreneur Prawin Ganeshan, 35, in connection with a social media post that allegedly contained derogatory remarks against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and an actor.
Ganeshan, who operates several online businesses, had allegedly uploaded the contentious advertisement in June while he was in Guangdong, China. The post was subsequently removed after it attracted criticism on social media. Following a complaint from a social activist about the advertisement, the case was registered by the Cybercrime Unit of South Zone, Chennai. The complainant told the police that he came across the advertisement while browsing social media, took a screenshot, and saved the URL before approaching the police.
During the investigation, the police issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) against Ganeshan. The alert was circulated to airports across the country.
Ganeshan, who was travelling from Hong Kong, landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi early on Saturday. Immigration authorities detained him after finding his name in the LOC.
On being alerted, a team headed by Cybercrime Wing Inspector travelled to Delhi. The police produced Ganeshan before a magistrate in the city and secured a transit warrant to take him to Chennai.
