The Needham, Massachusetts, community is grieving following the death of a high school student there.
Needham High School junior Elijah Chen died suddenly Monday, according to Superintendent Dan Gutekanst. His cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
Elijah had many friends on the football and track teams, as well as two younger siblings attending High Rock School and Pollard Middle School, the superintendent added.
Students in Elijah’s classes are being supported by the high school administration and staff at this time. The Needham Police Department also brought their emotional support dogs, Rocket and Ghost, to visit with students throughout the day.
Guidance and other counseling services will continue to be offered as necessary.
“News like this is difficult to share, especially when it involves a young person,” Gutekanst wrote in a statement to Needham families. “Please join me in offering prayers and support to Elijah’s family.”
