Only 80 Miles: Qatar Airways Introduces World’s Shortest Airbus A350 Flights Next Month

Qatar Airways has played an important role in the life of the Airbus A350. It was the launch customer of both the A350-900 and A350-1000, and is currently the world’s second-largest user of the Airbus twinjet. The most recent delivery was of A7-AOJ, a -1000 variant, in August 2026.

According to ch-aviation, Qatar Airways has 30 A350-1000s (averaging 5.6 years old) and 34 A350-900s (averaging 9.4 years old). They account for 28% of the Gulf giant’s passenger fleet. It will not be long until the oneworld member overtakes Singapore Airlines as the world’s largest A350 user, as only one frame separates them.

In October 2026, the world’s shortest bookable A350 operation is between Zurich and Milan Malpensa, which is operated by Ethiopian Airlines’ A350-900s on a fifth-freedom basis. However, that’ll change soon, as Qatar Airways will once again deploy the equipment on the ultra-short link from its Doha Hamad International Airport (DOH) dub to Bahrain International Airport (BAH).

This airport pair covers just 80 nautical miles (92 statute miles, 148 km) on a great circle basis. In reality, the distance will be longer than that, as maneuvering must be included. Cirium Diio data shows that the Gulf giant will deploy the equipment on just two occasions next month: on November 8 and 29. It’ll return in December and January. While no A350 flights are scheduled beyond then, that will change.

Deploying widebody aircraft on short hops in the Middle East (and in some other places in the world, including Japan) is commonplace. The A350 is not a stranger to DOH-BAH. Schedule analysis shows that it was last used in September 2026. A total of 37 departures are available this year, operating 4% of the route’s services. The A350 is on one in every 25 flights.

Hang On: It Is Not Technically The Shortest A350 Flight

Recall the emphasis in the previous section on bookable A350 services. On this basis, DOH-BAH will be the world’s shortest A350 scheduled operation between next month and January 2026. However, there is another, shorter service, but you cannot simply book that specific leg.

Operated by a 432-seat World2Fly A350-900 for Corendon Dutch Airlines, it is between Bonaire’s Flamingo International Airport (BON) and Curaçao International Airport (CUR) in the Dutch Caribbean. Covering just 41 nautical miles (76 km), it is about half the distance of DOH-BAH. Naturally, flights begin and end in Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), flying AMS-BON-CUR-AMS. Traffic rights are not available on the BON-CUR leg.

Historically, the world’s shortest scheduled A350 service was between Kinshasa’s N’djili International Airport (FIH) and Brazzaville’s Maya-Maya International Airport (BZV), with Air France and Ethiopian Airlines previously using the equipment. It covers a ridiculous 14 nautical miles (16 statute miles, 26 km) across the Congo River, although the real-world distance is, of course, more than that. Like the BON-CUR example, this was simply an add-on leg to a longer journey, without traffic rights.

Qatar Airways Between Doha & Bahrain

Between 2004 and 2026, Cirium data shows that Qatar Airways has deployed 14 different aircraft types and variants between DOH and BAH. In descending order of departures, they are the A320, A321, A319, A330-200, A330-300, 737 MAX 8, 777-300ER, A300-600, 787-8, 777-200LR, A350-900, A340-600, 787-8, and A350-1000.

Three daily flights are available in November, which is the joint-lowest offering for that winter month on record. The A320 will primarily be used, alongside the A350-900 and 787-8. The highest ever frequency in November was seven daily departures, which was last available in 2016.
