Just over 29% of PhD dissertations in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) submitted in the US this year through May contain artificial intelligence–generated writing compared with 1.7% in 2023—the first full year ChatGPT, the generative AI chatbot, was available to the public—according to a working paper recently published in the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Daniel Gross, a professor of business administration at Duke University and one of the paper’s authors, expects this trend to continue given the increased use of generative AI in scientific writing more broadly.
