Dozens of cattle killed, others roam Missouri streets after truck overturns

A crash in Kansas City, Missouri, on Oct. 18 unleashed dozens of cattle onto city streets and killed dozens more after a truck hauling the animals overturned, authorities said.

The truck and a passenger vehicle were involved in the accident shortly before 3 a.m. local time, according to the Kansas City Fire Department. The incident occurred on the westbound curve of Interstate 70 that passes over southbound Interstate 35 in the city’s downtown, Kansas City Police said.

Both drivers were transported to area hospitals for evaluation but were reported to be in stable condition, the fire department said.

The truck’s manifest showed that it was carrying 120 cattle, according to the fire department. Kansas City Police said in a statement to USA TODAY that 45 to 60 of the animals were killed in the accident.

Kansas City Fire Battalion Chief Michael Hopkins told KMBC that escaped cattle were reported as being seen as far west as Kansas City, Kansas, and as far south as the Crown Center, about three miles from the crash site.

The Associated Press reported that city authorities launched drones to track the cattle, and workers on horseback eventually corralled the cattle.

Police said in their statement that all cows have been accounted for.
