At least four Canadian service members were killed, and 19 people were critically injured after a “violent, fast-moving fire” ripped through one of the country’s busiest military bases on Oct. 17, officials said.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney described the fire at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright in Alberta as one of “the worst tragedies” to befall Canadian forces in peacetime. He ordered flags on federal buildings across the country lowered to half-staff in honor of the victims.
“The nation is in mourning,” Carney said. “We stand in solidarity and compassion for the families, the friends and the colleagues of all those affected by this tragedy.”
Officials said 39 people were hospitalized following the fire, which began around 4 p.m. local time on Oct. 17 in a training area where military personnel were conducting drills. The blaze started as a smoldering grass fire and rapidly spread, fueled by winds reaching as high as 60 mph.
Maj. Gen. Wade Rutland, commander of the 1st Canadian Division, called it an “uncommon, rapid” event. “I’ve certainly never seen anything like it,” Rutland said.
Fire at Canada military base spread rapidly through training area
Military and civilian firefighters battled the blaze through the night in what Carney described as “some of the worst conditions imaginable.” Air ambulances from Edmonton and Saskatoon were dispatched to the base, and patients were taken to hospitals in Edmonton, Wainwright, Calgary, and Red Deer.
Late in the evening on Oct. 17, municipal officials said the fire had crossed the base fence into a nearby district, but no evacuation orders were issued. Officials said on Oct. 18 that the fire was not expected to spread beyond its current boundaries.
The base houses the Canadian Manoeuvre Training Centre, which runs training scenarios and exercises for the army. Carney said those affected by the fire came from military bases across the country.
Canadian Forces Base Wainwright is located in the east-central part of the province, about 130 miles east of Edmonton.
The base had 1,310 military and civilian personnel stationed there as of 2021, according to census data. The town of Wainwright, north of the base, has a population of about 6,600.
Investigation into incident underway
Carney said he ordered national defense and emergency preparedness officials to deliver a detailed report on the incident. David McGuinty, Canada’s defense minister, was expected to travel to Wainwright for briefings on the situation.
Carney said Canadians “come together in crisis.”
