Telecom operators can improve existing 5G network performance by 25–30% using AI, without necessarily investing in additional hardware, according to Ericsson chief technology officer Erik Ekudden.
Much of the equipment available since 2025 supports AI capabilities through software upgrades, allowing operators to introduce improvements without waiting for 6G or new graphics processing units. Operators would still need to purchase and deploy the software, with upgrade requirements depending on equipment age and the features selected.
He added that telecom networks require smaller, specialised AI models for specific tasks rather than large, general-purpose models. The approach could help operators improve network performance while preparing for next-generation service
