We are in 2026, in the age of artificial intelligence, and yet what we are still contemplating is the gender gap in the workforce. Artificial intelligence is something that has thrown our lives onto a completely different aisle. Think of 2023 and how we actually used our minds for critical and analytical jobs. With a cappuccino in hand and spreadsheets opened on the desktop, the hypothalamus of our brain actually had to be stimulated every day to complete our tasks.Then came artificial intelligence, and suddenly we did not know whether to smile or sigh. Whether we welcomed it half-heartedly with a crooked smile or looked at it with apprehension, we knew it was going to barge through the corporate doors. To some, it seemed like a magic wand; to others, a formidable foe.The World Economic Forum’s Future of Jobs Report has projected that artificial intelligence and automation will transform the global labour market by 2030. And transformation, indeed, is already underway.Whether it is an ally or an anomaly is a different debate. The more concerning question is this: the silver platter is not being distributed equally.Yes, the technology is creating some of the fastest-growing and highest-paying opportunities in the labour market. But who is getting a seat at that table?According to recent research by LinkedIn, women are not getting an equal share of the opportunities emerging in artificial intelligence. And that brings us to an uncomfortable question: why is a technology that was once expected to help remove human bias is instead enshrining it?

AI is creating a new class of high-paying jobs

LinkedIn’s research shows that AI job postings in the US have roughly doubled since 2023. AI Engineer has overtaken Machine Learning Engineer as the most common AI occupation on LinkedIn, while postings for VP of AI roles have increased roughly sixfold.Another emerging position, Forward Deployed Engineer, which involves helping organisations implement AI solutions, has become the third most common AI occupation in job postings.According to LinkedIn, the typical AI job posting lists approximately $177,000 in compensation, compared with about $80,000 for a typical non-AI role. AI positions therefore command more than twice the listed compensation of non-AI jobs on the measure used in the research.The highest-paying AI occupations include Head of AI, Director of AI and Member of Technical Staff roles.

But women are not walking the AI aisle at the same rate

The gap appears at the point of hiring itself. Women accounted for 26% of US AI hires in 2025, according to LinkedIn, while they represented 50% of hires into non-AI occupations.In other words, women made up half of new hires in non-AI roles but only around one in four new hires in AI roles.The difference is particularly notable because AI is no longer a small or static employment category. It is one of the areas where demand is expanding rapidly.LinkedIn’s analysis describes this as an uneven distribution of AI opportunity. The data shows that women’s representation is approximately 10 percentage points lower in AI roles than in non-AI roles, indicating that the disparity is not confined to one occupation or one company.The question that follows is difficult but important: what is preventing women from entering a labour market segment that is expanding so quickly and paying so much?The LinkedIn data identifies the gap. It does not, by itself, establish a single cause for it.The higher the pay and seniority, the thinner the representationThe gender gap becomes more pronounced in several senior and specialised AI positions.Women account for only 20% of Head of AI roles, 26% of Director of AI roles and 18% of Member of Technical Staff positions, according to LinkedIn’s research.The leadership figures are even more striking.Across 27 countries, women occupy only 13% of C-suite AI leadership positions at AI companies. LinkedIn’s analysis finds that the gender gap is approximately 15 percentage points wider at the C-suite level than in positions below the executive level.The pattern creates a clear progression problem. Women are underrepresented when AI hiring begins, remain underrepresented within AI-focused organisations and become even less represented as positions become more senior.LinkedIn describes this through what it calls an “AI company penalty” and a “leadership penalty.” Women’s share of the workforce is about five percentage points lower at AI-focused companies than at comparable non-AI companies, while the gap widens further at executive level.The numbers therefore point to something broader than a recruitment gap.If fewer women enter AI, and an even smaller proportion reach leadership, who gets to decide the direction of an industry that is increasingly influencing the wider workforce?

AI’s education barrier adds another layer

Gender is only one divide visible in the data. LinkedIn’s research also finds that AI employment is concentrated among people with higher levels of formal education. About 91% of AI workers hold a bachelor’s degree or higher. In several of the highest-paid AI occupations, that proportion rises above 95%.Head of AI, Director of AI and Member of Technical Staff roles are among the positions where more than 95% of workers have at least a bachelor’s degree, according to LinkedIn.This means that access to AI opportunity is being shaped by multiple factors at once.The most lucrative AI careers often require specialised technical expertise, substantial educational credentials and experience in fields that have historically had their own representation gaps.As a result, the growth of AI jobs does not automatically mean that the benefits of that growth will be broadly distributed.The contradiction at the centre of the AI workforceThere is a distinction that matters here.The fact that women are underrepresented in AI employment does not, by itself, demonstrate that AI recruitment systems are discriminating against women. LinkedIn’s data measures representation and hiring outcomes; it does not establish that a particular hiring algorithm or employer is responsible for the gap.But the findings expose a larger question about how the AI economy is taking shape.AI is increasingly being developed as a technology capable of identifying patterns, processing enormous amounts of information, and supporting decisions. At the same time, the human institutions determining who gets access to AI careers continue to reflect longstanding disparities in education, hiring and leadership.That creates a paradox.The technology may be new, but the workforce structure surrounding it is not.If existing gaps in access to technical education, professional networks, workplace exposure and career progression remain unchanged, the rapid growth of AI jobs could simply carry those inequalities into a new generation of occupations.And because these occupations are among the fastest-growing and highest-paying, the consequences could extend well beyond representation within the technology sector.

The most visible opportunity may not be the most accessible one

LinkedIn’s findings also show that women are not uniformly absent from AI-related work.The most gender-balanced AI occupation identified in LinkedIn’s research is data annotation. But it is also among the lowest-paid AI roles and requires less specialised education than many technical AI positions. Data annotation work can also be project-based and remote.That contrast is important.Representation in lower-paid or less specialised positions does not necessarily translate into access to the technical, managerial, and executive roles where AI is generating some of its highest compensation and decision-making power.That distinction becomes increasingly important as AI expands from a specialised technology into a core component of business operations.

AI’s gender gap is becoming an economic question

The significance of these numbers ultimately lies in the speed of the transformation underway.AI job postings are expanding. New roles are emerging. Pay premiums are substantial. Leadership positions are being created around a technology that is expected to influence industries far beyond traditional technology companies.Yet women are entering these jobs at a much lower rate than they enter non-AI occupations, and their representation falls further in several senior positions.LinkedIn’s research does not suggest that AI opportunity is inherently inaccessible to women. Instead, it shows that access is uneven and that the gap appears at multiple points in the talent pipeline.That leaves employers, educators, and policymakers facing a question that is becoming harder to defer: as AI becomes a larger source of jobs, wages, and economic value, will access to those opportunities broaden at the same pace?The answer matters not only for the technology industry.It will help determine who builds the systems that increasingly shape workplaces, who makes decisions about their use and, ultimately, who captures the economic value created by the AI economy.
